Millions of people know MAH’s voice without knowing his name. It is the one roaring over the opening credits of the last season of Attack on Titan.

Shonan, 2004

SiM formed in November 2004 in the Shonan area of Kanagawa Prefecture. MAH started the band as a three-piece and both sang and played guitar. He put the guitar down in 2006, when SHOW-HATE joined. Bassist SIN and drummer GODRi arrived in 2009, and those four have been the band since.

The band’s own word for what it plays is reggae punk.

”The Rumbling”

On 7 February 2022, SiM released “The Rumbling,” the opening theme of Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2. It reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart in the United States. A second song for the series, “Under the Tree,” followed in 2023, and the album PLAYDEAD came out on 27 September 2023, through Pony Canyon in Japan and the Australian label UNFD abroad.

For a band that had spent nearly two decades building a following at home, it was a strange and sudden way to meet the rest of the world: through a cartoon, in ninety seconds.

The Host

MAH is also a convener. SiM runs its own festival, DEAD POP FESTiVAL, in Kawasaki. The 2026 edition moved to spring and was held on 4–5 April at Higashi-Ogishima East Park, with BABYMETAL, Maximum the Hormone, coldrain, MAN WITH A MISSION and Crystal Lake on the bill, plus ANKOR and Thornhill from overseas.

He turns up at other people’s events in the same spirit. He was one of three guest vocalists on ONE OK ROCK’s “Skyfall” in 2017, with Kenta Koie and Masato, and the song was performed again at coldrain’s BLARE FEST in February 2026. In November 2024 he led the REDLINE DREAM BAND, a 29-member supergroup put together to mark the end of the long-running REDLINE event.

Still Moving

On 1 April 2026, days before the festival, SiM released the single “FiVE TiMES DEAD (by my wallet)” through UNFD, its first new music in more than a year. The band billed it as its heaviest and most chaotic reggae punk so far.

Start with “The Rumbling,” because everyone does. Then play PLAYDEAD to hear what the band sounds like when it isn’t writing for a television series.
