A Japanese band that sings entirely in English has to decide who it is singing to: the home crowd or the foreign one. coldrain never chose, and the reason starts with its singer.
Two Languages
Masato Hayakawa has a Japanese father and an American mother, and is fluent in both languages. coldrain formed in Nagoya on 17 April 2007, and every one of its songs is written in English.
The lineup has not changed once. Masato on vocals, Y.K.C and Sugi on guitar, RxYxO on bass, Katsuma on drums: the same five people for the band’s whole existence. In a scene where lineup changes are routine, that is rare.
The Records and the Road
The albums run Final Destination (2009), The Enemy Inside (2011), The Revelation (2013), Vena (2015), Fateless (2017), The Side Effects (2019) and Nonnegative (2022). The overseas push began when the band signed with the UK’s Raw Power Management in December 2013. A European tour with Bullet for My Valentine followed in early 2014, then a release on Hopeless Records and the Vans Warped Tour in 2016.
The eighth album, OPTIMIZE = OPTDEMISE, came out on 25 September 2026 on Century Media, with Bert McCracken of The Used and Kenta Koie among the guests.
The Guest and the Host
Masato’s voice turns up on other people’s records, and other voices turn up on his. He was one of the three guest vocalists on ONE OK ROCK’s “Skyfall” in 2017, with Koie and MAH of SiM. coldrain’s “Mayday,” the opening theme of the anime Fire Force in 2019, featured Ryo Kinoshita, then of Crystal Lake.
That habit of bringing people together has a physical form. BLARE FEST is coldrain’s own festival, held at Port Messe Nagoya on 1–2 February 2020, 4–5 February 2023 and 7–8 February 2026. The band could have staged it in Tokyo. It put it in the city it comes from.
In 2026 coldrain also set out on a tour of all 47 prefectures, taking bands such as DEXCORE along for individual legs.
Why It Matters
A bilingual singer could have used English as a ticket out of Japan. Masato used it both ways: to tour abroad, and to build something at home big enough to invite everyone else in. More on how coldrain crossed over without losing its footing.
