Thirty years is a long time for any band, and longer still for a hardcore band that has never broken up. MINOR LEAGUE formed in Osaka in September 1996, and 2026 is its thirtieth year.

Two Voices

The founding singer was Takumi Shibata. In 1997 a second vocalist, Toru Daikubara, joined, and the band has had two singers ever since. Daikubara lives in Okinawa, which makes the logistics of a twin-vocal band more interesting than most.

The Japanese music database CDJournal describes the sound as a metallic, strong mixture style built on hardcore.

The Records

The first releases came fast. In September 1997 there was a split CD with GERONIMO, and the debut album 青い空 (Aoi Sora, “Blue Sky”) followed in October 1997 on Megaforce, on CD and LP. A second album came in 1999, the same year as two split seven-inches: one with the Osaka band redmammoth, and one with the American bands Vision Of Disorder and Wrongside.

In March 2001 HUMAN TO PEOPLE came out on Toshiba EMI, the band’s major-label debut. 攻め (Seme, “Attack”) followed in 2002. Around the same time the band made a split CD with the Tokyo hardcore punk band DESSERT, on Ranch Records.

In 2003 MINOR LEAGUE played Japan Nite at SXSW in Austin. Albums followed in 2003 and in October 2011, the second of them titled 宇宙内地球紀行, roughly “a journey around Earth inside the universe.”

The Long Pause, and No Split

Then the records stopped for about fifteen years. The band took roughly a year off when the drummer, Yoichi Hirono, had a child. In an interview in 2026 the members said they had never seriously considered breaking up.

INVADE

On 8 March 2026 MINOR LEAGUE released INVADE, a split 12-inch with the Yokohama band T.C.L, on LONG ISLAND RECORDS and MUFFIN RECORDS. MINOR LEAGUE’s side holds “ARASHITOSTOVE” and “ITAN.” It was the band’s first release in about fifteen years.

In April 2026 the three bands, MINOR LEAGUE, T.C.L and DESSERT, toured together as the 3 ELMENTS TOUR (the spelling is the promoters’). Dates were Machida CLASSIX on 4 April, Nagoya Club Zion on 18 April, Shinsaibashi BEYOND on 19 April and Shibuya CYCLONE on 25 April.

XXX

The anniversary shows carry the Roman numeral for thirty. One was booked for LIVE HOUSE OP’s in Fukuoka on 25 October 2026. The Tokyo edition is set for Shindaita FEVER on 29 November 2026.

The Tokyo bill is a map of the band’s world: DESSERT, T.C.L, HELLCHILD, SOBUT, IN FOR THE KILL, CHRONOMETER, ID&GALAXY and 43K&cheapsongs.

Why It Matters

Thirty years on, MINOR LEAGUE still has both of its voices, and its anniversary bill is full of bands whose histories go back to the 1980s and 1990s.

Start with “ARASHITOSTOVE,” then go back to 青い空.
