For a long stretch, Ryo Kinoshita was one of the faces of Japanese metalcore abroad: the vocalist of Crystal Lake on The Sign, True North and Helix. What happened next is worth knowing in the right order.

The Departure

On 28 September 2022, Ryo announced that he had left Crystal Lake. He gave the reason himself: he had been dealing with adjustment disorder, and it had become difficult for him to continue with the band.

That’s all he said, and it’s all that needs repeating. A frontman stating plainly why he had to stop is not common in heavy music, in Japan or anywhere else. Crystal Lake went on to hold auditions for a new singer.

Knosis

Less than four months later, in January 2023, a single appeared under a new name: “星砕” (SEISAI), by Knosis. The debut EP, The Shattering, followed in March, and a second EP, THE ETERNAL DOOM, that November.

Knosis is a duo. Ryo sings; Yosh Morita, the vocalist of Survive Said The Prophet, handles instruments and production, and the two write the music and lyrics together. We’ve written about how the partnership works.

The first full album, GENKNOSIS, came out on 1 August 2025 on SharpTone Records, the American metalcore label. It has ten tracks, with Yukina of Hanabie. guesting on “FUHAI.”

Why It Matters

Stories like this usually get flattened into one of two shapes: a singer who burned out, or a singer who changed bands. The record shows something else. Ryo left one of Japan’s biggest metalcore bands, said why, and within three years had released two EPs and an album on an international label with a new project.

For listeners abroad who found Japanese metalcore through his Crystal Lake performances, Knosis is where the voice went. Start with The Shattering, then GENKNOSIS.
