We’ve covered Knosis twice for the weight of the music. This piece is about something foreign readers often don’t know: who built it, and why that matters.

The Duo Behind It

Knosis is a duo. On vocals is Ryo Kinoshita, formerly the voice of Crystal Lake, one of the most important metalcore bands Japan has produced. On instruments and production is Yosh Morita, the vocalist of Survive Said The Prophet. The two write the music and lyrics together.

Consider what that pairing means. One of the defining metalcore voices of a generation, now outside the band that made the name, and the frontman of another major band stepping behind the desk and the instruments instead of the microphone. It’s a project built to do something neither of their best-known bands would.

What It Sounds Like

Broadly, Knosis is metal. In practice it’s a collision: metalcore, punk, hardcore and electronic music running into each other, with Ryo’s aggressive vocals over Yosh’s arrangements. The electronic elements are part of the architecture rather than decoration, which is what you’d expect when one half of the duo is the producer.

The Releases

The first single, “星砕” (SEISAI), arrived in January 2023, followed in March by the debut EP, The Shattering. A second EP, THE ETERNAL DOOM, came that November.

The first full album, GENKNOSIS, was released on 1 August 2025 through SharpTone Records, the international metalcore label. It collects ten tracks, including “SEISAI” and “腐敗 | FUHAI,” which features Yukina of Hanabie. — a guest spot that ties Knosis to another Japanese band with a strong following abroad.

Where to Start

Begin with The Shattering to hear the idea at its sharpest, then go straight to GENKNOSIS. If you know Crystal Lake or Survive Said The Prophet, listen for what each musician does here that they don’t do at home. That gap is the whole point of the project.
