The singer of one of Japan’s best-known power metal bands did not grow up on power metal. She grew up on Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin.
Before the Band
Asami’s background is R&B and soul. She also danced: classical ballet for about sixteen years, starting at the age of two. After high school she went to the United States to study jazz and hip-hop dance. Back in Japan she worked as a backing singer for VAMPS and UVERworld.
LOVEBITES formed in Tokyo in 2016, started by bassist Miho and drummer Haruna, who had played together in the band Destrose. They needed a singer. They chose Asami on the strength of a demo she had recorded.
It was a bold piece of casting, and the next ten years proved it right.
The Climb
The albums tell it in chart positions. Awakening from Abyss (2017) reached number 18 on the Oricon chart, Clockwork Immortality (2018) number 21, Electric Pentagram (2020) number 9, Judgement Day (2023) number 5.
The awards and stages came alongside. In 2018 the band won Best New Band at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and played Wacken Open Air, the first Japanese all-female metal band to appear there.
The Pause and the Return
On 17 August 2021, Miho announced she was leaving, and the band suspended its activities. It held open auditions for a bassist in the spring of 2022 and introduced Fami, then twenty, that October.
The second act has been bigger than the first. In 2024 LOVEBITES played its first world tour: 17 shows in 16 cities across 10 countries, between 14 June and 12 September. The fifth album, Outstanding Power, came out on 18 February 2026. On 29 March 2026 the band played the Nippon Budokan for the first time, and sold it out.
Why It Matters
Power metal singers usually come up through metal. Asami came in from outside it, with a dancer’s discipline and a soul singer’s training, and ended up fronting the band at the Budokan. For how the songs get written, read our piece on Miyako.
Start with Electric Pentagram, then Outstanding Power.
