Most of the bands that reach Japan’s big heavy festivals come from Tokyo or Osaka. HIKAGE comes from Sapporo, on the northern island of Hokkaido, a ninety-minute flight from the capital.
The Band
HIKAGE formed in Sapporo in May 2019. The lineup is GEN on vocals, Halki and YASUI on guitar, Wataru on bass and ISSEI on drums.
The band describes its music as hardcore and hardcore punk, from the 1980s to the present, crossed with the grunge, alternative punk and garage rock of the 1990s onward. That second half is what sets it apart. Where many young hardcore bands point towards metal, HIKAGE’s own description points towards grunge and garage rock.
The Records
The releases have come at a steady pace. A first single, “The Valley,” arrived in October 2019, five months after the band formed. The first EP, Light My Wounds, followed in 2021, and a second, 初期衝動, in 2023. The title means something like “first impulse.”
Singles kept coming through 2024 and 2025, among them “Happy” and “WAIT??!!!”. The first full album, True Colors, was released on 3 September 2025. An EP, human., followed on 1 April 2026, and its lead track, “tiny flower,” was promoted as hardcore mixed with the new wave of the 1980s and 1990s.
The Stages
The festival list is long for a band this young: KNOTFEST JAPAN in 2023, coldrain’s BLARE FEST in 2023 and 2026, SATANIC CARNIVAL, and the Hokkaido event KITAKAZE ROCK FES. In September 2025 HIKAGE played FRONTLINE FESTIVAL at Club Citta.
The Shared Guitarist
In November 2025 the guitarist YASUI became a full member of two bands at once: HIKAGE and Prompts. The two bands marked it with a joint tour in 2026.
It is an unusual arrangement, and it says something about how this generation of bands works. They share stages, guests and sometimes members.
Why It Matters
Sapporo is a long way from the centre of the Japanese music business. HIKAGE reached the national festival circuit from there within six years.
Start with True Colors, then human..
