In the summer of 2025, a hardcore band from Osaka toured 21 cities in Japan and made every show free for students. That decision tells you most of what you need to know about Tive.
The Band
Tive formed in Osaka in 2019. It is a four-piece, and it plays hardcore punk with a lot of other things folded in: emo, alternative rock, post-hardcore.
The band has been open about where that comes from. Among overseas bands it names Turnstile, Code Orange and Deafheaven. Among Japanese ones it names PALM, Tiger and NUMBERNINE. That is a wide spread, and it explains why Tive does not sit neatly in one corner of the scene.
The Titles
Tive’s records are worth reading before you play them. The first EP, released on 10 August 2022, is called 恥部, a word for the parts of the body, or of yourself, that you keep hidden. A single from September 2023 is titled “触れるものすべてと血を通わす,” roughly “sharing blood with everything I touch.”
The 2025 EP is called 核に匹敵する優しさ、それと諦め. In English: a kindness comparable to nuclear energy, and resignation.
These are not the usual hardcore slogans.
The Turnstile Shows
In July 2024, Tive was the support act when Turnstile played in Japan. It was opening for one of the bands it names as an influence, and it is the point at which wider attention began.
Doing It Themselves
In 2025 the band set up its own label, Excelled Records. The 核に匹敵する優しさ、それと諦め EP came out on 14 February 2025, and the tour for it ran from 2 August to 7 September: 21 shows in 21 cities, with free entry for students at every one.
The pace has held. A further EP, 裏・恥部, followed on 21 May 2026. On 24 July 2026 the band played the ROOKIE A GO-GO stage at Fuji Rock Festival, and a new single, “わたしのかたち,” came out on 19 September 2026.
Tive also turns up on other people’s records. View From The Soyuz has it as a guest on the song “Oc (cult).”
Why It Matters
Hardcore talks a lot about community. Free entry for students, at every show of a 21-city tour, is a concrete version of that talk.
Start with 恥部, then 核に匹敵する優しさ、それと諦め.
