The Eversolitude Years: When SOLITUDE A SLEEPLESS NIGHTS Became a Different Band

Bands change singers. Bands change style. It is rare for a band to change its singer, its style and its name on the same day, and rarer still for it to reverse the last of those three years later.

Before

Up to 2019, SOLITUDE A SLEEPLESS NIGHTS was a Tokyo melodic metalcore band with three EPs to its name. The third, BEYOND CAUSALITY, came out in March 2019.

The Announcement

In 2021 the band posted a short statement. It was welcoming a new vocalist, Tayori. From that day it would be called Eversolitude. And it was resuming activity.

The new name kept one word of the old one. The first release under it was titled OVERWRITE, announced for 13 March.

It is hard not to read something into that title. To overwrite is to save new work on top of the old.

The Sound

The lineup behind Tayori was the same as before: Gen Sunami and Yoshiki Takagi on guitar, NORA on bass, Tasuku Shimizu on drums.

What changed was the description. The band’s page listed Eversolitude as post-hardcore, math rock and post-rock. Elsewhere it was presented as a female-vocal band in the swancore and math rock vein.

Other musicians noticed. In April 2022 the Tokyo metalcore band Sailing Before The Wind put together a list of ten underground bands worth hearing, for a European site. Eversolitude was on it, described as a Japanese math rock and J-rock band, with a note that it used to be called Solitude A Sleepless Nights. FALLING ASLEEP and Sable Hills were on the same list.

A release titled SLOWLYCOLLAPSE followed in November 2022.

The Reversal

Then the old name returned. In August 2024 a three-song EP, SET THE FIRE TO THE SUN, was released as SOLITUDE A SLEEPLESS NIGHTS. The song titles left little doubt about the direction: “DIG YOUR OWN GRAVE” is the first of them.

Why It Matters

It would be easy to treat the Eversolitude period as a detour. A fairer reading is that the same three instrumentalists have two kinds of music in them, and gave each its own name so that nobody would be confused about which one they were getting.

The Eversolitude releases have stayed online. Start with OVERWRITE, then play SET THE FIRE TO THE SUN straight after, and hear the same players from two directions.
