Some bands measure success in chart positions. nervous light of sunday released its most recent record in an edition of 300 copies, on a seven-inch single, and said it should be treated as an album. That is a band with its own scale.

Omori

The band comes from Omori, a district in the south of Tokyo. It started in 2001 under the name Enthrone.

Two years later it changed both its name and its direction. The guitarist Tanabe, who writes most of the music, has explained why. The style the band was playing had become saturated, and its own early songs were too close to their models. The new name, nervous light of sunday, was taken from a song by the American band Circle Takes the Square.

The Sound

What came out of that change is usually called new school hardcore, with a metalcore influence. The vocals are in Japanese. The band has said that it started out with more melody and then deliberately stripped the sentimentality away.

The Records

The catalogue is small and spread over a long time. A demo in 2003. A first album around 2005 on Cosmic Note, a label that also released Endzweck. A mini-album, 瞼の裏側, in 2008. A split with Count Of Strength in 2010. The EP 冷静 in 2014.

深層心理 came out on 19 April 2017, as a seven-inch record with a CD, in an edition of 500.

A single, “神降ろし,” followed on 28 May 2024. On 26 December 2025 the band released 無理解: seven songs on a seven-inch, 300 copies. One of them, “粛正対象,” features Loyal to the Grave, another of Tokyo’s long-running hardcore bands.

The titles are a list of states of mind. In English they run: behind the eyelids, composure, deep psychology, incomprehension.

Why It Matters

A quarter of a century, a handful of records, pressings in the hundreds, and no sign of chasing anything bigger. Tokyo hardcore depends on bands like this one, who keep doing it at the size it naturally is.

Start with 深層心理, then 無理解.
