Most bands let critics pick their adjectives. GUNGIRE (ガンギレ) picked its own. Its self-styled nickname is “Japan’s most insanely angry band.”
Who
GUNGIRE is based in the Tokyo area. Its first singles came out in April 2022.
- NANA, vocals, also in THEO NOVA, and a guest and touring vocalist for FATE GEAR
- Matsu, guitar and songwriting, ex-FAKE ISLAND
- Taichi (“Ta1”), bass
The 2022 lineup also had a second guitarist, ysk, who was listed as on hiatus in November 2024. AVO Magazine, reviewing the band in 2025, called it a power trio.
Descriptions vary with the writer. JROCK NEWS said the band had thrash metal at its core. AVO Magazine called it metalcore. The American site Dead Rhetoric described it as modern metal or groove metal.
The Records
- “Rotten Vegetable,” digital single, 15 April 2022

The two mini-albums came three weeks apart, and AVO Magazine reviewed them together as a pair. SURGE includes a new mix of “Rotten Vegetable,” the very first single.
OUTLIVE has “Till The Grave,” “Go Away” and “G.A.M.E.,” the last featuring Flare Boy of Malissa. It was sold digitally and as a CD at shows and through the band’s shop.
First Video, First One-Man
The band’s first music video, for “Encrypted,” premiered on 23 November 2024. Two weeks later, on 7 December, the day the single came out, GUNGIRE played its first one-man show, at Shinjuku ANTIKNOCK.
In September 2025 the band played JROCK NEWS’s 10th-anniversary event at the same venue. Matsu is also part of the JROCK NEWS team. In a video interview for the same anniversary, the members named the United States, Germany and the rest of Asia as places they wanted to play.
On 26 October 2026 GUNGIRE is on ANTIKNOCK’s 41st-anniversary bill, GOLD EXPERIENCE, with BRIDEAR and Art’emïus.
Why It Matters
A band that calls itself the angriest in Japan is making a promise. GUNGIRE has kept the output steady since 2022 to back it up.
Start with “Encrypted,” then “Till The Grave.”
