We’ve introduced kokeshi before as a name worth tracking down. The catalogue is small and the order matters, so here’s the map.
Start: 憧憬 (2020)
The first album — the title translates as longing — is where the band’s vocabulary gets established. kokeshi formed in Tokyo in 2017 and settled into its current four-piece shape in 2019, so this record arrives from a unit that had already spent years working out what it wanted to be: black metal’s cold register, hardcore’s violence, shoegaze’s blur, and something else running underneath that doesn’t come from any of those traditions.
That something else is the Japanese horror sensibility, and it’s the reason this band doesn’t sound like the European blackgaze it superficially resembles. We’ve written about how that works.
Then: 冷刻 (2023)
The second album, released in April 2023 through Tokyo Jupiter Records, is the one to give someone who wants to understand the band in a single sitting. Nine tracks, and the sequencing is a descent rather than a collection — our full discussion is here.
The title translates roughly as cold moment, or the cruel hour, and the record earns both readings. This is where the band’s range finally gets deployed at full stretch: passages of genuine beauty, passages that sound like a building settling around you, and a vocal performance that moves between registers most bands would consider separate jobs.
The One-Track Test
If you have five minutes rather than an hour, find 涅槃欠損少女読経 from 冷刻. The title alone — a sutra chanted by a girl who fell short of nirvana — tells you what this band is doing that a European blackgaze act would never think to do. If that track lands, the rest of the catalogue will.
One Rule
Don’t treat this as background music. kokeshi builds atmosphere the way horror cinema does, through duration and restraint, and a track pulled out of sequence loses most of what makes it frightening. Both albums are designed to be walked through from the first minute.
For everything else — who’s in the band, what the vocals are doing, what label to buy from — the FAQ has it.
