If you only ever hear one kokeshi record, make it 冷刻. Released on 7 April 2023 through Tokyo Jupiter Records, it’s the band’s second album and the one where the pieces stop being ingredients and become a single, sustained work.

The Shape of It

Nine tracks, and the order is doing deliberate work. It opens with 胎海 — womb sea — and the choice tells you the record intends to start before consciousness rather than in the middle of a fight. 海馬に沈む, sinking into the hippocampus, follows the same logic inward: this is an album about memory and submersion, not about confrontation.

Then the vocabulary widens. 報いの祈り, a prayer for retribution. わらべうた, a children’s song. A bracketed instrumental passage, (recollect), sitting exactly where a listener needs to surface for air. 涅槃欠損少女読経 — the sutra of a girl who fell short of nirvana — which is as complete a thesis statement as this band has ever put on a tracklist. Into My Darkness -蝕- brings in a guest, Deepa, the album’s one moment of outside contact. And it closes on 彼は誰の慈雨の中で, a title built on kawatare — that old word for the half-light when you can’t tell who’s approaching.

Read those titles in order and you have the record: a descent from before-memory, through prayer and childhood and religious failure, out into ambiguous dawn. Very few extreme metal albums are this literate about their own architecture.

What It Sounds Like

Black metal’s cold high end, hardcore’s physical violence, shoegaze blur across the whole frame, and passages of ambient patience that most bands in this space would cut for pacing. The album’s distinguishing quality is its willingness to wait — dread accumulating rather than detonating, which is the Japanese horror logic applied at album scale.

Over it, 亡無’s four vocal registers do the narrative work: growl, clean, whistle and recitation deployed as separate characters rather than as a demonstration of range.

How to Play It

Start to finish, once, loud, at night. The album is sequenced as a descent and the descent is the point; sampling track five tells you almost nothing about what this record does to a listener who entered through track one.

Then, when it’s over, go back to the debut 憧憬 and hear how much of this was already there, waiting.
