Small catalogue, striking sound, almost nothing written about them in English. Here are the answers.

Who are kokeshi?

A four-piece band from Tokyo, formed in 2017, settled into the current lineup in 2019. Our introduction is here.

What genre is this?

The band’s own framing is Japanese horror entwined with blackened metal, and in practice that means black metal, chaotic hardcore, shoegaze, post-rock and ambient all in the same songs. If you need a shelf: blackened hardcore, or blackgaze with the atmosphere turned toward dread rather than melancholy.

What does the name mean?

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese wooden doll — limbless, with a painted face. Familiar, domestic, and quietly unsettling, which is precisely the aesthetic.

Who sings?

The vocalist is credited as 亡無, and the performance covers four distinct registers: death growl, clean singing, a whistle tone, and spoken recitation. Music on 冷刻 is credited to 亜光. More on the voice here.

Are the lyrics in Japanese?

Entirely, and deliberately. The band’s use of chant and nursery-rhyme forms only works in the original language.

What have they released?

Two albums: 憧憬 in 2020, and 冷刻 on 7 April 2023 through Tokyo Jupiter Records. Nine tracks on the second, including a guest appearance from Deepa. Track-by-track here.

Where do I start?

冷刻 if you want the band at full strength; 憧憬 if you’d rather watch the sound assemble. Full map here.

Where can I buy the records?

Tokyo Jupiter Records handles physical copies and the band’s material is on Bandcamp. For a band at this level, buying direct is the difference between them making another record and not.

Are they active?

The band maintains its own site and continues to operate independently. Check their channels for current activity rather than trusting any article’s snapshot — including this one.
