In Japanese folklore, kitsunebi — foxfire — is a ghostly light that floats in the dark, sometimes leading travellers astray, sometimes lighting their way. kitsunevi, a heavy metal trio from Osaka, took that image and turned it toward comfort. The band’s stated concept is a foxfire, a guiding light, that draws in and leads the way for people suffering from pain and anxiety.
The Band
kitsunevi formed in Osaka in 2023 as a three-piece: Keichan on vocals and guitar, REINA on bass and backing vocals, and Summer on drums and backing vocals.
The sound is built from four elements the band names directly: aggressive screaming, metallic guitar, grooving bass and powerful drumming. A trio has nowhere to hide, and kitsunevi make that an advantage — every part has to carry weight, and the groove between REINA’s bass and Summer’s drums gives the songs a momentum a bigger lineup might smother.
Moving Fast
The band has covered a lot of ground quickly. In November 2023, alongside its second EP, Smell the Coffee, kitsunevi toured Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. In June 2024 it appeared at New Wave Of Japanese Heavy Metal in Osaka — an event title that says a great deal about how this generation sees itself. And in December 2024, the band toured Taiwan.
That last step is the one to notice. A trio not yet two years old taking its music overseas is exactly the outward-facing instinct that separates the current generation of Japanese heavy bands from earlier ones.
Where to Start
Smell the Coffee is the best entry point. Listen for the rhythm section’s groove underneath the screaming, then read the band’s concept again. The comfort they promise comes through the weight, not in spite of it.
