Start with the instruments, because they explain everything. KIAZMA plays down-tuned eight-string guitar against a five-string bass. That’s a rig designed for one purpose: to reach the lowest, most physical frequencies a rock band can produce, and to lock them into rhythms that feel less like riffs than like machinery.
The Sound
KIAZMA formed in Tokyo in 2023. The core is progressive metal in the lineage of Meshuggah and Sweden’s Vildhjarta — polyrhythmic, low-end-first, built on syncopation that keeps a listener slightly off balance. Around that core the band folds in post-rock’s slow builds, blackened hardcore’s violence and screamo’s desperation, and sings the whole thing in Japanese.
That last choice matters. Much of the progressive and djent-adjacent world defaults to English. Singing in Japanese over this kind of rhythmic architecture gives KIAZMA a cadence no Western band in the style can reproduce.
The Band
The lineup is a five-piece: Ando on vocals, Nori and MOCHI on guitars, Kokeguchi on bass, Mahoro on drums. The members came from Tokyo bands including isolate and OVUM, so KIAZMA arrived with real scene experience behind it.
The first show took place on 27 April 2024 at Koiwa BUSHBASH. Since then the band has shared bills with ENDALL, kallaqri and Nepenthes — good company, and a sign of where the scene places them.
Where to Start
The Demo 2024 recording on Bandcamp shows the concept at its rawest. The debut album, Blank Page, is the full statement. Listen at volume, and let the rhythms throw you off before they pull you in. That’s how this music is meant to work.
