Some bands release an album every two years. heaven in her arms has released three since 2001. Each one took long enough that the wait became part of the band’s reputation.

The Name

The band formed in Tokyo in 2001 and took its name from a song on Converge’s album Jane Doe, released the same year. That is a clear signal of where it started: the intense, chaotic end of American hardcore.

It did not stay there. The music slowed down and stretched out, taking in post-rock and the darker parts of metal. Pitchfork described it as a blend of extreme metal, post-rock and 1990s emo.

The Albums

The three full-length records are 黒斑の侵蝕 (2007), 幻月 (2010) and 白暈 (2017). In English they are usually given as Erosion of the Black Speckle, Paraselene and White Halo. Between them came EPs and a run of split releases with other bands, among them Killie, COHOL and the French band Aussitôt Mort.

The records are released by Daymare Recordings in Japan, with partner labels in Europe and North America.

For much of that time the band had three guitarists. One of them, Takayuki Ryuzaki, was a member from 2001 to 2019. The lineup since then is Kent Aoki on guitar and vocals, Katsuta on guitar, Kentaro on bass and Hiroki Watanabe on drums.

The Comparison

Foreign writers usually reach for one name when they describe this band: envy, the Tokyo group that set the template for Japanese post-hardcore. The comparison is fair as a starting point. The American band Deafheaven has also been cited as having drawn on heaven in her arms.

The New Song

On 16 February 2024 the band released a new song, “Dawn Yarn.” Its Japanese title means “thread of dawn.” The guest vocalist is PG2 of the band ENSLAVE, and the band has explained why: the collaboration came about after the death of ENSLAVE’s singer, an old friend.

A fourth album, The End of Purification, has been announced for 13 November 2026, nine years after the third.

Why It Matters

Patience is rare in heavy music. This band has made it a method.

Start with 白暈, then “Dawn Yarn.”
