If you have followed Japanese melodic metal for any length of time, you have heard Fuki, possibly without realising it was the same person each time.

How It Started

Fuki was born in Tokyo on 9 June 1986. She found heavy metal in junior high school through X JAPAN. The decision to become a singer came later, and she has credited it to one voice: Kuroneko, of the band Onmyo-za.

The Four Names

In 2005 she joined the power metal band Light Bringer as its vocalist. She stayed until the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2014.

In 2008 she joined Unlucky Morpheus, led by the guitarist Shiren. It became her longest-running band. The albums include CHANGE OF GENERATION (2018), Unfinished (2020) and evolution (2022), and the concept album Gate of Hell came out on 3 June 2026. The lineup around her is Shiren and Jinya on guitar, Hiroyuki Ogawa on bass, Fumiya Morishita on drums and Jill on violin.

In 2012 she became the singer of DOLL$BOXX, alongside members of Gacharic Spin.

And in 2016 she started a solo career under the name Fuki Commune. The first album, Welcome!, reached number 25 on the Oricon chart. The second, Million Scarlets, reached number 18 in June 2019.

For several years she was doing three of these at once.

The Writer

She is not only the voice. Fuki writes the lyrics to almost everything she sings, across all of her bands, and the total is past a hundred songs.

That is worth knowing before you listen. The words in a Light Bringer chorus, an Unlucky Morpheus epic and a DOLL$BOXX single came from the same pen.

Why It Matters

A singer who heard Kuroneko and decided to try has become, twenty years later, one of the most recognisable voices in Japanese metal herself. The line of influence runs straight through her.

Start with Unlucky Morpheus’s CHANGE OF GENERATION, then Gate of Hell.
