Crystal Lake is usually discussed through its singers. That’s understandable — the band has had four of them. But the story makes more sense told through the member who never left: guitarist Yudai Miyamoto, known as YD.
The Last Founder Standing
Crystal Lake formed in Tokyo in 2002. The original lineup was Kentaro Nishimura on vocals, Yusuke Ishihara on drums, Seiji Nagasawa on bass and Yudai Miyamoto on lead guitar. Of those four, only YD is still in the band. Since 2012, YD has handled backing vocals as well.
The lineup around the founder is comparatively recent: drummer Gaku Taura, bassist Mitsuru and rhythm guitarist Hisatsugu “TJ” Taji all became full members in 2021, the first two after years as touring players.
Six Albums, One Guitarist
The catalogue is the clearest evidence of what YD has held together:
Dimension (2006), Into the Great Beyond (2010), The Sign (2015), True North (2016), Helix (2018) and The Weight of Sound (2026).
Those six records span three different lead singers. The Sign, True North and Helix were made with Ryo Kinoshita. The Weight of Sound, released on Century Media, was made with vocalist John Robert Centorrino. The voice at the front changed. The guitarist underneath it did not.
The Hardest Job in a Band
Think about what the last few years demanded. In September 2022 the band’s long-time vocalist, Ryo Kinoshita, stepped away. Crystal Lake held auditions, chose a singer from about 250 applicants, made an album, lost that singer to the realities of living on another continent in March 2026, and announced a new one — PK of Prompts — that August.
Many bands don’t survive one change of frontman. This one has kept its name and kept making records through several. That takes someone who decides, each time, that the band continues, and then does the work of making it true.
A band’s identity is often credited to its voice. Crystal Lake suggests another answer: it lives in whoever refuses to stop. For more than twenty years, that has been YD.
