Corrupted generate more questions than almost any band we cover, mostly because the band answers none of them itself. Here’s the briefing.
Who are Corrupted?
A doom and sludge band from Osaka, formed in 1994 by Hevi, Talbot, Monger, Chew and Yokota. Our introduction is here.
Is this a Japanese band? The album titles are in Spanish.
Japanese, entirely — Osaka-based since the beginning. The lyrics are almost exclusively in Spanish with occasional Japanese, English and German passages, which is a deliberate artistic choice rather than a nationality clue. We’ve unpacked why.
What do they actually sound like?
Extremely slow, extremely heavy, and emotionally closer to mourning than to aggression. Songs run long by design; the band’s method is duration and mass rather than riffs-per-minute.
Is it true one album is a single 71-minute song?
Yes. El mundo frío (2005) is one continuous piece, recorded in Osaka, and there’s a harp on it. Full discussion here.
What should I listen to first?
Not El mundo frío. Start with Llenándose de gusanos (1999), then Se hace por los sueños asesinos (2004). The complete map is here.
Why can’t I find any interviews or photos of them?
Because there aren’t any. The band has given no interviews and posed for no press photographs in three decades; the only images in circulation were taken by fans at shows. That silence is its own subject.
What label are they on?
The core run — Llenándose de gusanos, Se hace por los sueños asesinos and El mundo frío — came out on HG Fact, a pillar of the Japanese hardcore underground. Garten der Unbewusstheit (2011) arrived on Nostalgia Blackrain. The HG Fact connection matters: it places Corrupted inside Japan’s hardcore lineage rather than in an imported doom scene.
Are they famous in Japan?
Less than they are abroad, which is a genuinely unusual shape for a Japanese band and a story in itself.
Can I see them live?
Shows happen, rarely and without much announcement, which is consistent with everything else about them. Watch the underground channels rather than expecting a tour cycle. If the chance appears, take it — a band built on physical low-end is a different proposition in a room.
