The sound is New York. The lyrics are Japanese. The label is British. Blow Your Brains Out, known as BYBO, is a small lesson in how international hardcore has become.

How It Started

The band formed in the spring of 2019, in the Tokyo and Kanagawa area. It began with a conversation. The bassist Yusuke suggested to the guitarist Tats that they start a band. A drummer, Uskn, agreed straight away. They found a vocalist, Kai, to write lyrics in Japanese. A second guitarist heard about the plan and asked to join.

None of them were beginners. Between them the members had played in Stand United, Inside, DieBirth, Civil Defense and Soul Vice.

Things moved fast. A five-song demo came out in August 2019 on Bowlhead inc., the label that also releases FIGHT IT OUT. The first show was that October.

The Sound

BYBO is rooted in New York hardcore. The names that come up are Cro-Mags, Breakdown and Killing Time: the heavy, groove-led bands of the late 1980s.

What keeps it from being an imitation is the language. Kai sings in Japanese, by design.

The Album

The debut album, The Big Escape, came out in 2023. It was released by Quality Control HQ, a hardcore label based in Britain. The opening track is “No Control.”

The response overseas was strong. The American hardcore site No Echo introduced BYBO as the Tokyo band behind one of the best LPs of the year.

Why It Matters

Think about the path this music has taken. A style invented in New York in the 1980s is learned by musicians in Tokyo, sung in Japanese, pressed by a label in Britain and praised by a website in the United States.

A generation ago that route barely existed. BYBO needed a good demo.
