On 18 August 2026, a trio that had spent two decades in the underground walked onto the stage of the Nippon Budokan and played for three hours. The date was not chosen at random. It was the band’s twentieth birthday, to the day.
The Name
The band is called 八十八ヶ所巡礼, usually written in English as 88Kasyo Junrei. It means the pilgrimage of the eighty-eight places: the circuit of eighty-eight Buddhist temples around the island of Shikoku, which pilgrims have walked for centuries.
The singer and bassist, Margaret Hiroi, comes from Ehime, one of the four prefectures the pilgrimage passes through.
The Band
88Kasyo Junrei formed on 18 August 2006. It is a three-piece: Margaret Hiroi on vocals and bass, Katzuya Shimizu on guitar and Kenzoooooooo on drums.
The music is built on progressive rock, with a great deal of imagery drawn from Buddhism and Shinto. The band’s own name for it is simpler: Nippon rock.
It releases everything on its own label, Psychedelic Progressive Revolution.
The Dates
Look at the release dates of most of the albums and you will notice a habit. The first album, 八+八, came out on 18 August 2009. SYG88 arrived on 18 August 2011. ○△□ was released on 8 August 2012, 攻撃的国民的音楽 on 8 August 2014, 日本 on 18 August 2015, 凍狂 on 18 August 2018 and 幻魔大祭 on 18 August 2021.
The eighth month, and the eighth or eighteenth day. A band named after the number eighty-eight has been doing this for its whole career.
The 2025 album, 八+九, broke the pattern and came out on 2 May.
The Budokan
The Budokan show was announced as a surprise on 29 January 2026, at the end of a concert at Zepp DiverCity. A short anniversary tour led up to it, through Nagoya and Osaka’s BIGCAT. A new single, “正怒,” came out on 1 August.
On the night the band played 25 songs. The concert was titled 日本万歳!!
Why It Matters
There is no major label in this story and no hit single. A three-piece playing complicated music on its own terms filled the Budokan after twenty years of doing the same thing well.
Start with 攻撃的国民的音楽, then 八+九.
